In order to renew my license to practice Psychology in Florida, the state requires that I take a total of 40 continuing education credits every two years. Some credits are mandatory to take, such as medical errors, laws and rules, and domestic violence. For the rest of the hours though, I can choose from a variety of subjects as long as the course is approved by the Florida Board of Psychology.
This biennium I chose to take courses on the following subjects: Aging & long term care, suicide assessment, motivational interviewing, sleep disorders, human sexuality, and depression and older adults (evidence based practice). I noticed that compared to the last time I had to renew, there were many more courses on the topic of marijuana, following the national trend of more and more states legalizing cannabis in some form or another. I always feel a great sense of accomplishment after completing my coursework to renew my license, and I hope to put what I’ve learned to good use!
